Publication.
The collection of information on British circus, whether books, articles, cuttings, handbills, programmes, posters and other library and archive items is but an indulgence unless it is made available and used to tell a story. The ‘story’ may be anything from an article in a popular magazine to a Ph.D. thesis. The aim of publication should be to inspire interest and inform. An appreciation of British circus, in its historical and present forms, is more important than ever in the present day.
Selections of records in the DBCB have been published in book form as ‘Victorian Arena; the Performers’, volumes 1 and 2 (Lingdales Press, Formby, 1995 and 2000 respectively). In addition, the database of information has formed the starting point for a series of studies resulting in the publication of articles in various journals and magazines.
